5 Must-Do's for the Pre-Moving Checklist

Making a move can be mentally taxing in addition to being physically taxing. Everyone overlooks something. That's why we recommend creating a pre-move checklist of to-dos. Here are a few suggestions to help you get started with your next move. /p>

It may seem like many of these items are obvious, but it's easy to overlook them when you are in the middle of hiring long-distance movers in Hawaii, packing up belongings, or even trying to wrap up a house sale!

Put the Utilities in Your Name

Getting settled into a new home is just that much easier when all the utilities are on and working. Make sure to call ahead of time to get those utilities set up, like electricity, gas, water, and trash. Taking care of this step before moving may also save you some time. If the utilities are already switched off, the utility provider will schedule an activation date that could be a week or two out.

Forward Your Mail

Avoid delays with mail delivery to your new home by setting up mail forwarding. Even if you don't have the address for your new place yet, you can request a mail hold and pick up mail in person at the post office. Or, you can rent a P.O. Box to receive your mail for months or years.

Register Your Children for School

If you have children, consider starting the registration process as soon as possible. Their new school may want you to fill out some forms and have the kids meet their new teachers. It also takes some time for their school records to transfer over to the new school.

Request Time Off Work

Even if you are completing a local move, it might take longer and wear you out more than expected. A day or two off work can ease some of the strain on your shoulders. Plus, it's better for you to inform the boss that you'll need time off way before the event, rather than calling out of work unexpectedly.

Transfer Your Insurance/s

Most people overlook the need to inform your insurance providers of the move. Certain types of insurance take where you live and drive into account when calculating premiums, such as car insurance or renter's insurance. If buying a new home, you'll also want to update your homeowners' insurance with the details of the property.
