While moving into a new home can be exciting, it can also be quite stressful, particularly if you have to think about how to protect your house as you move all of your family's personal belongings. The good news is that it's quite easy to minimize the risk of damage as you move. All you need is a little bit of careful planning before moving day arrives!
Keeping Stairwells and Doorways Safe
Moving bulky furniture can be a challenge for even the most experienced long-distance movers. That's why we recommend using padded moving blankets to protect delicate wood areas and remove doors from their hinges so they can be moved safely away.
Protecting Your Windows and Wall Décor
If you're moving, it's important to remember that many of the window coverings or even the picture frames hanging on your walls could easily be damaged while your movers are moving your bulky appliances or furniture. So ideally, you should pack away these types of things before moving day.
Landscaping and Lawn Care
To ensure a safe pathway for your moving crew, remove any landscaping items or other obstacles that could potentially block the movers' line of travel. Also, cover the grass with plywood, cardboard, or plastic to create a protective layer if your yard is wet or soggy.
Avoiding Spills and Trips
First, ensure that all liquids or powders are properly sealed and stored. If needed, make sure your movers take extra time to secure any items that might leak or spill during the move. Second, be sure to take some time to make sure there are no loose rugs or trip hazards for your movers to avoid.
Finally, don't forget about the food in your fridge! Most refrigerators contain chemicals that can react with other items in the refrigerator during a move—so either pack it up ahead of time or leave it behind.
Protect Your Flooring
Are your floors inside your home protected from dirt and debris? Many people don't think about this until the movers have traveled in (and out) several times and they are looking at a mess. If you have any plastic wrap or particleboard lying around, you can use this to protect your floors. Just lay the plastic wrap on top of the floor, then place the particleboard on it. Once that's done, take a moment to protect your garage flooring by ensuring that all lawn or vehicle chemicals or oils are properly disposed of, as many movers will not handle (or move) these items.
